U Ba Nyan (1897 – 1945)

Major, pivotal painter. Master of many media. Studied under Kinch and Ward, then more than 8 years in England on two trips. Began at Royal College of Art and moved to Yellow Door School, London. Trained and influenced by Spenlove-Spenlove and Brangwyn. Took European Tour and visited North Africa, 1927 – 28. 
Oil works are outstanding for chiaroscuro effects. Introduced impasto and opaque watercolor “medium wash” techniques to Burma. Founder of the Rangoon School. Myanmar National Museum, (Yangon) Universities Cultural Library, Singapore Art Museum and allegedly Imperial Collection (Japan).
